Ancient Italian grapes in Matakana
Unique varietals with traditional winemaking methods
With help from his friends and family in 2006, Matavino owner Jim Hight planted some interesting Italian red varieties from the Piemonte area in north west Italy, adding diversity to the Matakana region. These include the ancient red grape varieties Dolcetto, Nebbiolo and the acclaimed Barbera, as well as Chardonnay and Viognier (named Amelia after his eldest granddaughter who lives in the Turks & Caicos Islands). The vines are hand nurtured using sustainable practices, and have been Vegan certified.
Visit Jim in his Cellar Door situated inside the winery where you can also see a traditional winemaking method involving imported clay amphorae to give the wine a unique flavour. The Cellar Door is open for tasting and wine sales every Saturday and Sunday from the end of October until Easter, and most of January. Other times can be arranged by first calling Jim – he is usually working in the vineyard most days.
