Te Whare Ra
A deep respect for the land we cultivate
Provenance, organic farming and authentic, world-class wines from Marlborough.
This journey started out in 1979 with the Te Whare Ra original plantings which are now the oldest vines in the Marlborough region. Allen and Joyce Hogan planted the first vines on a small block of land in Renwick in the heart of Marlborough’s wine growing region. What impressed them most about Marlborough apart from its stunning scenery is the climate, which is not only perfect for making great wine, it is also well-suited to a number of different varieties – there are not many places in the world that are like this. Great wines have a sense of place combined with texture, balance, fruit concentration and great length. These are qualities that cannot be added, they have to come from the vineyard. The philosophy of Te Whare Ra is wholly centred on making seriously good wine. The wines express their place – they speak of somewhere-ness rather than of a same-ness. A blend of old and new world winemaking techniques is used, combined with respect for the place the grapes are grown.
